WINBAK BREDS BETTERTHANCHEDDAR 1:49.2 CANE PACE WINNER, POWERFUL MIST THIRD

While one Winbak-Farm bred was race favorite, another, Betterthancheddar, driven by Yannick Gingras, scored a 1:49.2 mild upset rolling up the inside to win the $342,875 Cane Pace, after a weather-prompted  shift to Pocono Downs on Saturday, Sept. 11. Winbak-bred, sired, and sold Powerful Mist was third.

Roll With Joe, also bred by Winbak was the 3-5 Cane favorite, but finished out-of-the-money, while hard-hitting Betterthancheddar, a 4-1 third wagering choice, won the first 2011 Triple Crown Pace event.

Co-owned by trainer Casie Coleman’s West Win Stable and Steve Calhoun, the Bettors Choice colt streaked from post 7 to lead at the quarter in:25.4 before yielding the front to a  three-wide Shadyshark Hanover teamed with Jim Morrill Jr.  Shadyshark Hanover set a fast tempo through a :53.2 half and 1:20.4 three panels with Betterthancheddar enjoyed a trip behind the leader.

In deep stretch, Betterthancheddar shot up the inside to post his fifth win of the season in 11 races. Townslight Hanover, handled by Andrew McCarthy, flashed along the passing lane to finish runner-up while Winbak-bred, Powerful Mist and Hall of Fame driver John Campbell, closed from sixth, to take third. Winbak-bred Roll With Joe, the 4-5 favorite, piloted by Tim Tetrick, starting from outside post 8 and was victim of poor racing luck. The Meadowlands Pace and Battle Of The Brandywine champion made a three-wide move after the three quarters then tired in the lane and finished sixth.

The connections of Betterthancheddar have announced they are going to pay a $45,000 supplemental fee in order to make Betterthancheddar eligible to the Little Brown Jug.

The mobile 2011 Cane Pace was moved from Freehold to Tioga Downs hurriedly was transferred to Pocono Downs due to flooding conditions in central New York state.
