City Delight Tops January Select Sale

Over 300 horses went through the ring during Monday’s 2011 January Select Mixed Sale at the Meadowlands, with City Delight topping the auction.

William Donovan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL shelled out $195,000 to purchase the three-year-old daughter of Bettors Delight-Western City, who sold as part of the Preferred Equine Inc. consignment.

City Delight, who was a multiple winner in the New York Sires Stakes program last season, faced the gate 11 times as a freshman and put together a 4-2-1 record while stashing away in excess of $81,000. She took a flashy speed badge of 1:54.2 over Yonkers Raceway’s half-mile oval.

Some of the other big tickets to sell were Foreign Officer (1:49.4 - $213,767) for $150,000 by David Rovine of St. Petersburg, FL. and Up Front Hoosierboy (1:51 - $202,994) who went to Ben Baillargeon of Rockwood, ON for $115,000.

"There was a good crowd and we're quite satisfied with the results," Geoff Stein, Sale General Manager told Trot Insider.

A strong Canadian dollar also lured buyers from north of the border to head stateside with Stein noting that trainers such as Ben Baillargeon and Ben Wallace were "very active."

The sale grossed $4.7 million providing an average of $18,432.
