Cassell's Poseidon Seelster led an 11-race qualifying session on Friday morning (July 5) at Woodbine Mohawk Park with a 1:57 mile, the fastest of 71 two-year-olds to set foot on the track.

 

The son of Sunshine Beach and Porsche Seelster sprinted off at will after a :59.4 half, opening up a 6-1/2 length lead on the far turn before being geared down to the line by Bob McClure. Poseidon Seelster, who is trained by Matthew Dupuis, defeated Winsons Vinner (Paul MacDonell) and Card Swap (Anthony Haughan).


Scotians Shadow opened the morning with a 1:57.3 mile, fastest among pacing fillies on the session. Tyler Moore send the daughter of Shadow Play and Itza Free For All to a clear lead from post 6, and the pair controlled comfortable splits of :29.3, 1:00.4 and 1:29.2 before powering away to an eight-length win over Shiraz Seelster (Randy Waples). Mark Etsell trains Scotians Shadow for John Matheson.

 

On the trotting side, Sebastian U was the only one to eclipse the 2:00 mark, doing so in line to Anthony MacDonald. The Sebastian K S-Broadway Paige gelding bounced back from a break in his June 25 purse debut with a resounding 1:59.3 victory over Ti Amo Hanover (Mario Baillargeon) for Thestable Sebastian U Group and trainer Jason McGinnis.


Scott McEneny led all trainers with a double on the session, haltering Loud Jet (2:00.1, Sylvain Filion) and Better B Swift (1:58.4, Filion).
