DELAWARE HORSES DOMINATE $300,000 HEMPT MEMORIAL



Horses owned by Delaware finished first, second, third, fourth and fifth, taking all five payoff positions, in the $300,000 Max Hempt Memorial Pace on May 21 at Pocono Downs, near Wilkes Barre, Pa.,  one of the top events for -three--year-old male pacers.



Custard The Dragon, overlooked at 18-1 odds, scored a 1:50.2 victory in the race for colts and geldings. Montrell Teague drove the winner owned by Fannin Racing of Lincoln, Del., Robert Feldman, Ted Gewertz and trainer George Teague, of Harrington, Del.



Powerful Mist driven by Tim Tetrick led for most of the mile before being overtaken by Custer The Dragon in deep stretch. The Delaware-sired colt, sired by Powerful Toy standing at Winbak Farm of Delaware,  trained by Wayne Givens for Seaford, Del. area interests, had to settle for second.



Movie Idol, owned by the Callahan family from the Greenwood, Del. area, driven by Dover Downs driver champion Corey Callahan and trained by his brother Shaun, took third money,



Carter Racing of Greenville, Del. and LeBlanc Racing, of Felton, Del., own fourth-place finisher Vegas Rusty, trained by Steve LeBlanc,  while Smile A  Little racing for Claim To Fame LLC of Frankford, Del. and Janet Ho and Lightning 5 Stable and trained by Mike Hall, was the fifth place finisher..   



In harness racing, unlike thoroughbred racing, the top five finishing horses in a race split the purse with 50%, second place earn 25%, third, receives 12%, fourth, gets 8% and fifth place rewarded 5% of the total purse.
