NEWS AND INSIGHT ON WINBAK FARM

Stories are from the leading industry news sources.

Bettor's Delight has bred 6,742 mares throughout the world as of the 10th of August 2016. Spread that over the 15 years he has been at stud, and that is an average of 449 mares bred each year.

Never before has a stallion bred so many mares. These are staggering numbers and are set to cause breeders a number of problems over the next twenty or so years. At the end of the current breeding season Down Under, that has just started, Bettor's Delight would have bred over 7,000 mares in the 15 years he has been at stud.

Of those mares bred to date, 1,465 were bred in Australia over 14 seasons, 2,870 mares were bred in New Zealand over 14 seasons and 2,407 mares were bred in North America over 17 breeding seasons. In Australia and New Zealand Bettor's Delight was only used lightly by frozen semen in his first four years. It was not until he came down as a shuttle stallion in his fifth year that he started to breed the big numbers with fresh semen.

Bettor's Delight has bred 29 millionaires to date world-wide. Four of those have earnings of over $2 million, two mares and two boys with the richest being Darlin's Delight that has won $3,024,304.

Bettor's Delight has produced five in sub 1:48, three in North America and two in Australia. In North America they are Shebestingin p3, 1:47m ($760,038) out of a Abercrombie mare, Betting Line p3, 1:47.2f ($1,831,942) out of a Western Hanover mare, Bettor Sweet 1:47.2m ($2,816,687) out of a Falcon's Future mare.

In Australia they are Adore Me 1:47.7 ($1,677,032) and the full brother Have Faith In Me 1:47.5 ($1,381,274) who are both out of the BG's Bunny mare Scuse Me 1:53.5 ($126,841). Adore Me and Have Faith In Me were Scuse Me's 10th and 12th foal produced. Scuse Me was the fastest horse in New Zealand, male or female for many years and her progeny and their progeny have now become the most sort after standardbreds Down Under.

Bettor's Delight has produced world-wide progeny earnings of $234,482,418 as at the 10th of August 2016 and this amount is growing rapidly every day.

Total earnings for progeny from broodmares by Bettor's Delight are at this moment $21,340,022. The two richest progeny are the Australian bred Our Waikiki Beach 1:50.3m ($793,319) 24 starts 23 wins and 1 second and the North American bred Darlinonthebeach p3, 1:48.4f ($722,915) both by the great son of Mach Three, Somebeachsomewhere.

For the first time in history a stallion is leading the overall money won list in North America, Australia and New Zealand at the same time and over several years and that stallion is Bettor's Delight. To think that Bettor's Delight has been at the top of the money winning sires list in three continents when he does not even stand physically in one continent it is hard to comprehend. In fact Bettor's Delight has led the overall money winnings sires list in North America for the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons, in Australia for the 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons and in New Zealand for the 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015 and the 2015/2016 seasons. What more can be said, just a freak stallion.

Bettor's Delight is out of the averagely bred Armbro Emerson (Abercrombie) mare in Classic Wish. But that is the only thing that is average about this mare. Taking a time trial record of 1:52 on her way to earning $436,273 makes good reading but it is her record at stud which places her up with the all-time brood mare greats.

Classic Wish has produced 3 millionaires. Apart from Bettor's Delight p3, 1:49.4 ($2,581,461) she has left the full brother Roll With Joe p3, 1:48.2 ($1,799,250) now at stud with his first crop current three-year-olds in 2016 that has already produced one millionaire, two $250,000 earners and seven $100,000 plus earners to date and No Pan Intended p3,1:50.3 ($1,613,180), now sire of over $37,362,819 in earnings. Classic Wish has another son, another full brother to Bettor's Delight and Roll With Joe in Classic Card Shark and he has sired 37 foals old enough to race that have earnings of $1,065,565 to date.

The 10 winners that Classic Wish has produced to date have total stake earnings of $7,510,186 a massive effort for any brood mare in history. The other feature for Classic Wish is that her progeny at the sales have always sold for big money as the following list shows;

Bettor's Delight bred 150 mares in 2012 in Canada that produced 98 foals born in 2013, 54 males and 44 females.

This eleventh, Canadian bred crop produced by Bettor's Delight in 2012 has again hit the jackpot with two current standout millionaire three-year-olds, a filly and a colt. The filly is L A Delight p3, 1:49.1f ($1,068,329) 22 starts 17 wins and the outstanding colt Betting Line 1:47.2f ($1,831,942) 22 starts 15 wins. This crop of 96 eligible three-year-olds has already produced 54 race winners of earnings of $4,382,548 to date. Bettor's Delight has already produced 7 $100,000 plus winners from this crop of current three-year-olds and there is still four months of the season to go.

Bettor's Delight has a current two-year-old crop of 125 eligible to race from 168 mares bred in Pennsylvania with already two promising stars in the making, Bettors Up (5 starts 4 wins) and Bettors Dream (3 starts for 3 wins) and the two-year-old season is just beginning. This will be the 12th crop produced by Bettor's Delight.

Bettor's Delight has produced at least one millionaire in ten of his eleven first crops to the races to date, an incredible achievement for any stallion. His progeny have remarkable ability to keep racing for a long time as shown by the fact with his first eight crops racing (870 eligible to race) that are six-year-old and over, 285 of his horses have had over 100 starts each and 48 of those have had over 200 starts each to date and one has had 300 starts to date.

That is around 32% of all his eligible horses that have continued to race over a long period of time. They are sound racehorses that keep going to the races forever and ever. With the first eight crops racing Bettor's Delight has only 95 eligible horses that have not raced. That is an average in those crops of 11 foals per year that have not raced. As a stallion Bettor's Delight has a stunning and outstanding siring record that would be impossible to duplicate anywhere.

BROODMARE SIRE IN NORTH AMERICA

Incredible statistics for Bettor's Delight as a Broodmare Sire are already showing up in North America with his progeny having earned just under $19 million to date. The exact amount is $18,857,045 in earnings. The oldest progeny racing out of his mares are current eight-year-olds and with the number bred, breeders would expect that Bettor's Delight broodmares will dominate the broodmare sires lists in the future world-wide.

The leading cross over Bettor's Delight mares today in North America is with the stallion American Ideal who has 50 credits, followed by Art Major who has 47 credits, Rocknroll Hanover with 25 credits, Well Said and Rock N Roll Heaven with 24 credits and then a big drop to Somebeachsomewhere who has 13 credits followed by Western Ideal with 10 credits.

The major surprise here is the number that Well Said and Rock N Roll Heaven have as their progeny are only current four-year-olds. Notice should be taken here that three of the top four producers, that is American Ideal, Art Major and Rock N Roll Heaven all stood in the state of New York where Bettor's Delight stood. It is only natural that these stallions that stood in New York would have a major advantage at this early stage of the broodmare sires credits for the Bettor's Delight cross.

The American Ideal - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop five-year-olds) has produced seven $100,000 plus winners including Ali Blue p2, 1:51.4f ($317,225) 6 wins and El Boombito 1:49.3f ($218,762) 11 wins.

The Art Major - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop six-year-olds) has produced nine $100,000 plus winners including the very good Ronny Bugatti 1:50.4h ($655,897) 21 wins, Sir Lehigh Z Tam 1:50.2m ($292,179) 11 wins and Im Banksy 1:51f ($197,227) 14 wins.

The Rocknroll Hanover - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop seven-year-olds) has produced eight $100,000 plus winners including Emeritus Maximus p3, 1:48.4f ($392,623) 12 wins, Ideal Rocky p2, 1:52.4m ($298,151) 5 wins and the full brothers E Street Plan 1:49.4f ($247,648) 14 wins and Rockavellian 1:50.4f ($208,661) 21 wins.

The Well Said - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop four-year-olds) has produced five $100,000 plus winners including Better Said p2, 1:52.1f ($191,580) 8 wins, Techtor Hanover 1:51.3f ($129,158) 10 wins and Cut And Paste 1:51.3f ($123,855) 6 wins.

The Rock N Roll Heaven - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop four-year-olds) has produced two $100,000 plus winners. They are Angels Rockn Pink 1:52.1f ($147,714) and Bin N Heaven 1:55.4h ($117,740). Eleven of Rock N Roll Heaven's 24 credits are just current two-year-olds.

The Somebeachsomewhere - Bettor's Delight cross (oldest crop six-year-olds) has produced seven $100,000 plus winners including the world champion Darlinonthebeach p3, 1:48.4f ($722,915) 10 wins, Ultimate Beachboy p3, 1:48.3f ($478,185) 18 wins, Misssomebeach Blue 1:51.3f ($238,375) 17 wins and Bahama Blue 1:52f ($207,217) 8 wins. Notice must be taken here that Darlinonthebeach is out of Darlins Delight, one of the greatest racemares in history with over $3 million in earnings.

COMMENT

The record that Bettor's Delight has established in North America is as good as it gets. Each of his first nine crops to race has produced a least one millionaire and to do that over such a long period is testament to his class. His eleventh crop is the only crop to date that has not produced a millionaire. His twelve crop, the current 2016 three-year-old crop, has already produced two millionaires in Betting Line 1:47.2f ($1,831,942) 22 starts 15 wins and a filly from this crop L A Delight p3, 1:49.1f ($1,068,329) 22 starts 17 wins. That will mean Bettor's Delight has produced at least one millionaire in eleven of his first twelve crops to the races in North America, a truly incredible record for any stallion. His record at producing outstanding fillies and mares is second to none. His overall record, longevity and ability to produce such outstanding fillies and mares marks Bettor's Delight as the all-time greatest Standardbred stallion produced anywhere in the World.

BROODMARE SIRE IN AUSTRALIA

Bettor's Delight had only very small crops in Australia until his 2007 foals were born. The oldest progeny from Bettor's Delight mares are seven-year-olds in the 2015/2016 racing season. There are just a few as a result of those first small crops by frozen semen.

His first serious crop in Australia are three-year-olds about to turn four on the first of September 2016. This crop has produced three $100,000 winners to date including the sensational Our Waikiki Beach 1:50.3m ($793,319) 24 starts 23 wins and 1 second and Mister Jay See 1:52.4 ($146,395) 15 wins. As a broodmare sire in Australia, Bettor's Delight has produced small crops racing for 32 starters for 20 winners of $1,590,719 in stakes. In addition to the Australian progeny from Bettor's Delight mares, the New Zealand progeny earned in Australia another $451,135 and that makes a total of $2,041,854 in earnings for all horses racing out of Bettor's Delight mares in Australia.

COMMENT

His record in Australia is very similar to his record in North America. With crops that are generally smaller than his opposition, Bettor's Delight is now completely dominating the Australian Sire's premiership. He has won the premiership the last three years and has increased his dominance in each of those three years. They are great two and three-year-olds who go on to be very good older horses and that makes them perfectly suited to the Australian industry.

NEW ZEALAND STUD RECORD

The first four crops by Bettor's Delight in New Zealand were all by way of frozen semen which explains the very small crops initially.

First Crop (2003) - Foals 13 - Qualifiers 7 - Winners 7

The two best performers produced by Bettor's Delight from this small crop were Franco Nester 1:55 ($255,086) and Casimo Bromac 1:54 7 ($93,541).

Second Crop (2004) - Foals 8 - Qualifiers 5 - Winners 3

This crop really opened the breeders eyes down under when from just eight live foals Bettor's Delight was able to produce the brilliant Bettors Strike 1:55.7 ($890,201) 16 wins, Odds On 1:57.3 ($227,528) 16 wins and Vegas Bound 1:52.5 ($357,628) 27 wins. It was a good indicator of what was to come over the next few seasons.

Third Crop (2005) - Foals 25 - Qualifiers 18 - Winners 15

With a winner to live foal percentage of 60%, this crop carried on the great work of Bettor's Delights first two small crops. It also produced his first down under bred millionaire with Highview Tommy 1:55.2 ($1,021,904) 17 wins, cracking seven figures. Others from this group to make their mark were Percy The Punter 1:57.1 ($332,067) 17 wins, Ardens Darlin 1:57.2 ($245,829) 5 wins, Crown Law 1:51.4 ($278,061) and Bet Your Life 1:57.9 ($120,461).

Fourth Crop (2006) - Foals 7 - Qualifiers 4 - Winners 4

Bettor's Delight had another very small crop of just seven foals of which four won. Eton Bromac 1:56.4 ($100,238) was the best of the four winners but low key is the best way to describe this very small crop.

Fifth Crop (2007) - Served 345 - Foals 261 - Qualifiers 196 - Winners 162

With the success of those small frozen semen crops, Bettor's Delight was rushed by New Zealand breeders when his fresh semen became available. He served 345 mares that produced 261 live foals and what an outstanding crop it was. Even with those huge numbers Bettor's Delight has winners to live foal percentage of 62.06% which was ground breaking news for the New Zealand breeding industry.

The star of this crop money wise was the top age group performer Gold Ace 1:52.6 ($1,247,053) 16 wins. He had plenty of company from this group including the champion filly Bettor Cover Lover 1:53.8 ($1,061,534) 19 wins, who dueled with the brilliant Bettor's Delight filly Carabella 1:55.2 ($693,615) 17 wins, most of her career. Two horses from this crop that were exported to America have performed with distinction in the Northern Hemisphere. They are Dream Out Loud 1:48.4 ($598,656) 25 wins and Malak Uswaad 1:49.2 ($542,585) 21 wins and they are both still racing in 2016. Ohokas Bondy 1:53.6 ($388,148) 22 wins, did a great job in Perth while others such as God Send 1:51.8 ($255,037) 20 wins, Tact Hayleys Delight 1:52.7 ($230,146) 13 wins, Paradise City 1:56 ($197,576), Poacher 1:52f ($196,101), Chance 1:52.5 ($155,698) 17 wins, Tuapeka Kahu 1:53.6 ($162,652) 14 wins, Southwind Arden 1:55.6 ($150,127) 9 wins, On The Razzle 1:53.1 ($164,017) 15 wins, Delight Brigade 1:57.9 ($147,745) 12 wins, Pembrooks Delight 1:54.7 ($137,477) 9 wins, Compton Street 1:55.5 ($155,653) 17 wins and Rommel 1:54.5 ($133,004) 20 wins, all kept Bettors Delight's name to the fore.

Sixth Crop (2008) - Served 162 - Foals 127 - Qualifiers 90 - Winners 75

This was another top crop numbers wise for Bettor's Delight but just maybe lacking that out and out star that the previous crop produced. Texican 1:50.1 ($745,274) 27 wins, was a smart age group performer in New Zealand before being exported to North America where he has carried on the good work. Bettor's Fire 1:53.8 ($461,632) 27 wins, has done a similar job in Australia. Alberto Contador 1:50.4 ($402,733) 28 wins, has done a good job in North America and two fillies from this crop that did a great job in New Zealand were Dancing Diamonds 1:56.1 ($343,276) 9 wins, and Cheer The Lady 1:55 ($314,625) 11 wins, while Best Deal Yet 1:55h ($276,881) 19 wins, and Bettor Reason 1:52.6 ($279,904) 18 wins, have also performed well. Mark Dennis 1:54.2 ($234,411) 31 wins, is still going well in Australia and he has plenty of company there in the form of Your Good Fortune 1:56 ($182,479) 14 wins, Windinherhair 1:54.6 ($140,476) 11 wins, Fearless Leader 1:54.1 ($137,063) 16 wins, The Dip 1:54 ($155,742) 17 wins, Highview Teejay 1:56.1 ($109,982) 13 wins and Blackberry Lane 1:53 ($119,827) 13 wins.

Seventh Crop (2009) - Served 329 - Foals 243 - Qualifiers 180 - Winners 150

This was another outstanding crop for Bettor's Delight headed by the freakish mare Adore Me 1:47.7 ($1,677,032) 24 wins who has claims to being the greatest racemare ever produced in the Southern Hemisphere. Her 1:47.7 win from the outside of the gate and one out for the rest of the race was one of the greatest performances produced by a mare in the history of the sport.

But this crop by Bettor's Delight also produced a string of high class colts including these millionaires Bit Of A Legend 1:50.6 ($1,210,241) 29 wins and Arden Rooney 1:54.2 ($1,070,230)21 wins and then there is Ohoka Punter 1:52.4 ($941,316) 23 wins who is heading to become Bettor's Delights next millionaire. They were ably supported by such top horses as Flaming Flutter 1:53.9 ($624,400) 19 wins, Five Card Draw 1:53.7 ($546,428) 24 wins and Northview Punter 1:53 ($450,830) 23 wins. The list of other smart performers from this group is long but includes horses such as Mossdale Conner 1:51.7 ($416,966) 12 wins and Elios 1:55 ($220,176) 10 wins while others of note included Norvic Nightowl 1:53.4 ($230,805) 19 wins, Caribbean Rose 1:51.1 ($204,659) 18 wins, Bettor Rock On 1:52.1h ($227,324) 20 wins, Gottalife 1:50.7 ($220,870) 16 wins, Bettor Dreams 1:54.6 ($186,952) 14 wins, Zenable 1:51.2 ($176,148) 18 wins, Ultimate Delight 1:52.3 ($179,604) 14 wins, Condrieu 1:51.5 ($194,210) 18 wins, Jungle Genie 1:52.3 ($218,001) 22 wins, Rozelski 1:57.3 ($179,718) 6 wins, The Fascinator 1:53.9 ($155,162) 10 wins, Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($153,856) and Splendour 1:54.6 ($148,990) 8 wins. All in all, just an outstanding crop including three millionaires (Ohoka Punter only a few dollars short) headed by an out and out champion in Adore Me.

Eighth Crop (2010) - Served 160 - Foals 117 - Qualifiers 80 - Winners 62

It had to happen at some point that Bettor's Delight would produce a crop a bit below his normal standard and this is it. His numbers are 10 points down on what most of his crops achieve and while there are a few outstanding performers there is nowhere near the depth in this crop that there is in the others he has produced. This crop is headed by the very good horse Tiger Tara 1:54.6 ($612,956) 13 wins who has been a top age group performer as well as the good mare Willow 1:51.4 ($314,043) 13 wins. Maxim 1:55.9 ($397,413) 5 wins was a top two and three year old while Lancewood Lizzie 1:52.7 ($258,477) 13 wins is another good mare from this crop. Others of note include open class performer Te Kawau 1:54.3 ($186,376) 12 wins who is now in the US as well as Bettor Offer 1:53 ($179,035) 14 wins and Darcee 1:50.4 ($121,031) 12 wins who is also now in the US.

Ninth Crop (2011) - Served 327 - Foals 235 - Qualifiers 173 - Winners 127

Another super good crop produced by Bettor's Delight Down Under.

The star of this crop is undoubtedly the brilliant Have Faith In Me 1:47.5 ($1,381,274) 14 wins who had an outstanding three year old season as well as an even greater four-year-old season winning the $200,000 Group 1 Chariots Of Fire and the $750,000 Group 1 Miracle mile.

Just turned five-year-olds on the 1st of August in New Zealand this crop has produced a number of top quality horses the likes of Hug The Wind 1:52.6 ($349,208), while the fillies were represented by the likes of Kate Perry 1:52.8 ($431,558) 15 wins, Linda Lovegrace 1:54.8 ($265,433) 14 wins and Joanne's A Delight 1:55.4 ($203,135) 5 wins. Others to impress were Kept Under Wraps 1:51.9 ($304,950), Bettor Spirits 1:53.8 ($187,581) 12 wins, Delightful Lana 1:54.5 ($148,269) 10 wins, Express Stride 1:54.3 ($161,790) 6 wins , My Kiwi Mate 1:52.2 ($212,867) 13 wins, Burnaholeinmypocket 1:52.1 ($141,549) 12 wins and Delightful Offer 1:53.6 ($136,521) 12 wins, Itz Bettor To Win 1:54.3 ($147,058), Better B Amazed 1:53.5 ($112,406) 12 wins and The Faithful ($100,486) 7 wins. There are numerous others who are well on the way to being a $100,000 earner so this crop has bounced back bigtime after the slightly disappointing 2010 crop.

Tenth Crop (2012) Served 301 - Foals 220 - Qualifiers 155 - Winners 88

A champion colt and a champion filly produced in one crop is becoming the norm for Bettor's Delight. This crop of current two-year-olds has already produced the champion colt More The Bettor 1:53.1 ($339,447) 10 starts 6 wins and 4 seconds and a champion filly Spanish Armada 1:55.7 ($306,416) 8 starts 6 wins and 2 thirds. BROODMARE SIRE NEW ZEALAND

Bettor's Delight had only very small crops in New Zealand until his 2007 foals were born. The oldest progeny from Bettor's Delight mares are seven-year-olds in the 2015/2016 racing season. There are just a few as a result of those first small crops by frozen semen. His first serious crop in New Zealand are three-year-olds about to turn four on the first of August 2016. This crop produced one good horse called Shandale 1:55.3 ($155,922). As a broodmare sire in New Zealand, Bettor's Delight has produced four small crops racing for 39 starters for 22 winners of $441,123 in stakes.

COMMENT

An outstanding record from a stallion that has raised the bar several notches since commencing stud duty in New Zealand. Manages every season to produce leading colts and fillies and dominates the sire's premiership in New Zealand. The bonus for breeders has been the countless number of top mares that he has produced which really does set him apart from his competition. Three champions in Bettor Cover Lover 1:53.8 ($1,061,534), Carabella 1:55.2 ($693,615) and the sensational Adore Me 1:47.7 ($1,677,032) are all as durable as they are fast. Other very good fillies are Dream About Me 1:53.3 ($381,032) Dancing Diamonds ($343,276), Spanish Amarda 1:55.7 ($306,416) Ardens Darlin ($245,829), Picadilly Princess 1:53.1 ($231,645) and Donegals Delight ($205,428).

It has now reached the stage where Bettor's Delight is completely dominant in New Zealand. He has won the last five premierships and the margin each year is getting bigger, not smaller. Number one in mares covered, service fee, yearling sales and the sires premiership. He has nothing left to prove down under?

WORLDWIDE STATISTICS

As progeny of Bettor's Delight move between Australia and New Zealand and the Northern and Southern Hemisphere there can be an overlap especially when referring to $100,000 winners. That is why we frame it as country by country so we only count horses that are bred say in New Zealand who earn $100,000 in New Zealand.

That chart looks like this;

New Zealand - 56 | Australia - 56 | North America - 400

When you include horses that don't win $100,000 in their country of birth but do so in another country, that chart looks like this;

New Zealand - 56 | Australia + NZ in Australia - 166 | North America - 400

The same occurs when it comes to money won worldwide. The overall chart looks like this;

New Zealand - $30,804,916 | Australia $24,546,330 + NZ in Australia $24,924,875 = $49,471,205 | North America - $154,206,297

Worldwide earnings to date are an incredible $234,482,418

POSITIVES

He has done a huge job where ever he has stood at stud. Bettor's Delight has shown that ability to leave those exceptional fillies and mares. His progeny can get up and run at two and then carry on as older horses at the top level. His overall record in North America is nothing short of outstanding and his numbers and percentages are on a par with anything produced. For an 18-year-old stallion he has great fertility and continues to serve huge books of mares in the Southern Hemisphere. With the way his fillies and mares have raced over the years, he is primed to be an outstanding broodmare sire as well.

NEGATIVES

There really are not any negatives to Bettor's Delight. With the recent announcement that his good son, Betting Line 1:47.2 ($1,831,942), is going to the breeding shed at Hanover Shoe Farms for the 2017 season, could provide this superb stallion with the final saga to his outstanding siring career.

OVERVIEW

Just an incredible racehorse sire anywhere he has stood at stud. Unbelievable ability to sire great fillies and mares sets him apart from all his competition. A tremendously fertile stallion and being from such a great broodmare and leaving such great fillies and mares bodes well for his future as a broodmare sire. There has to be a question mark over Bettor's Delight becoming a sire of sires. Bettor's Delight is rising 19 years old and he has yet to produce a stallion of any note. There is still time with his latest sons such as Bettorthancheddar 1:48 ($1,636,086) along with Betting Line 1:47.2 ($1,831,942) and Down Under his star three-year-old from last season Lazarus p 2, 1:52.9 ($901,964) all will be given a chance to prove themselves as sires. Several others are being given an opportunity world-wide and one of those may yet provide Bettor's Delight with a successor.
