Switzer Stable dominates the Maine Sire Stakes

Scarborough, ME --- Twin $9,928 splits of the 3-year-old filly pacing division of the Maine Sire Stakes were contested at Scarborough Downs on Sunday, and holding true to form, entries from the powerful Kevin Switzer Stable were prominently placed once the dust had settled and the numbers posted on the infield board.

Maeve (Veeza--Dynamite Donna) continued her dominant ways on Sunday by posting an insistent sort of victory as she sprinted clear of the field through ever-widening margins while engineering a sterling :57.1 back-half clocking en route to her 8-1/2 length final advantage over Nelliesirishprayer (Ruel Goodblood, Jr.) and Pembroke Bebop (Heath Campbell).

Owned and trained by Switzer, the Maine-bred miss solidified her standing as divisional track record holder at the Downs, shaving four-fifths seconds off her existing local standard while stopping the timer this week in 1:56.2.

With big hoof steps to fill and Kevin Switzer again calling the shots, Maeve’s stablemate, Barbra Ann, took to the raceway in the day’s second Maine Sire Stakes division, employing a similar front-running strategy while posting an in-hand, 4-1/4 length victory over Pembroke Bow Bow (Heath Campbell) and Siberian Rose (Drew Campbell), timed in 1:56.4.

This Maine-bred daughter of Goin To The Beach, owned by the KDK Standardbreds of Cumberland, Maine, won for the 14th time from only 17 career starts. She is the reigning 2-year-old Maine Sire Stakes champion and current freshman divisional track record holder at Scarborough Downs.

The two stakes victories added to overnight scores resulted in five driving wins for Kevin Switzer on Sunday’s nine-race program, with four of them coming from his very own roster of trainees, once again lending credence to the latest handicapping theory to be in fashion at the Seaside Oval: If it’s Sunday you’ve got to bet on Switzer.

Live harness racing will continue at Scarborough Downs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week at 4:00 p.m., eastern, with post time for the popular Sunday matinee slated for 1:05 p.m.
