Jezzy makes it look easy in NYSS
Monticello, NY--There was no drama whatsoever when Ray Schnittker sent Jezzy to the lead and even less as they both just cruised around the double oval unconcerned en route to a four-length 2:00.2 triumph in her division of the $175,000 New York Sire Stakes for sophomore trotting fillies at Monticello Raceway on Tuesday (Sept. 13).
The big, strapping daughter of Credit Winner-Ladylind raised her seasonal bankroll to over $447,000 while turning back Brooklyn with Jimmy Morrill Jr. and Em El Cash in rein to Trond Smedshammer.
“She was going along so easily I never had to say a word to her,” Schnittker told co-owner Ted Gewertz in the winner’s circle after the victory. He then pointed to filly’s head and added “I didn’t even have to pull the ear plugs.”
Owned by Schnittker, Jerry Silva, Jeffrey Gural and Gerwertz, Jezzy was sent off as good value for a filly of her caliber and paid $3.40 to win.
In a day where short fields and front-end racing by the favorites in all the races kept the early pace slow when the drivers of trailing fillies seemed reticent to challenge the odds-on favorites, the final times were not as fast as they could have been.
The fastest clocking of the afternoon belonged to Temper Of Will when Trond Smedshammer rallied the the Conway Hall-Dixie Crystal filly down the center of the track to score a 1:59 victory over Massive Drama and driver Jeff Gregory.
“Everything worked out perfect for us,” Smedshammer admitted. “We got a fast half when favored Miss Sue V (Cat Manzi) was parked and when I got cover up the backside and was within striking distance at the top of the stretch. And when I urged my filly she dug in and went on to victory.”
Owned by Roger Slobody, Alfred Ross and Chip Campbell, Temper Of Will paid $5.50 for win.
Former Mighty M driving champ Cat Manzi reached the winner's circle in sire stakes action when he guided Go Go Dancer to an easy six-length victory in a 2:00.3 clocking, turning back Vacation Angel, who was driven by Bruce Aldrich Jr.
“We never had an anxious moment,” the Catman said about Go Go Dancer’s victory. “She’ll do anything you ask of her. She’s just a sweetheart.”
The daughter of Credit Winner-Princess Gladiator, owned by Jim Winske, Steve Michaels, Rossie Smith and the Kelley Racing Stable, paid $2.70 for win.
A 1:00.2 first half in yet another NYSS split forced Jimmy Morrill Jr. to move Some Girls before the half and though they coasted along on the outside until the final turn when Morrill asked his filly it was "Katie bar the door," as Some Girls trotted off to a 1:59.3 victory for owners Ted Gewertz, Michael Rosenfeld, Y.Jean Brunet and Gates Brunet.
Sent off as the 1-5 favorite, Some Girls paid $2.50 for win and raised her seasonal bankroll to over $158,000.
A final NYSS division saw Per Hendricksen take advantage of the pole position and send favored Eight Bells to the lead and they were never in trouble as the Conway Hall-Ella Minnow Pea filly reached the half in 1:01.2. From there Eight Bells trotted away from her company to score a 4-1/2-length victory over Nowerland Firebird and Greg Merton in a time of 2:00.1.
She is owned by the Asa Farm and Steven Organ and as the betting favorite in the race Eight Bells paid $5.20 for win.
