According to a report by the Dayton Business Journal, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled 6-1 today that governor Ted Strickland’s controversial plan to approve 17,500 video lottery terminals at state racetracks is subject to a voter referendum.

The article states that letohiovote.org, a politically conservative group, had sued in Supreme Court over the slots plan and argued its case earlier this month.

“We are not unmindful of the effect our decision may have on the state budget, nor of the commendable efforts of the members of the executive and legislative branches of state government to fulfill their constitutional duties to balance the budget in Ohio," justice Terrence O’Donnell wrote. "However, our own constitutional duty is to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Ohio Constitution irrespective of their effect on the state’s current financial conditions."
