George Frick Passes

Wednesday, December 02, 2009  By: Standardbred Canada

Delaware harness racing lost one of its biggest supporters today, as George Frick, a member of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame, passed away at age 83.

Frick, a former president of the Delaware Sports Writers and Broadcasters Association, not only enjoyed coming to the races, but also wrote often. He had a three-times-a-week column 'Frick's Picks' in the Delaware State News with tidbits and photos about horses and horsemen.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he graduated from Philadelphia's Temple University, and later became sport director at the one-time Wilmington, Delaware station WDEL-TV, channel 7.

In the 1950s, Frick often featured interviews of owners and horsemen on live racing telecasts from Brandywine Raceway.

In addition to being voted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and former president of the Delaware Sport Museum and Hall of Fame, Frick was recipient of many awards for his outstanding leadership in civic and sports activities throughout The First State.

Frick is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Gladys 'Gladdie' Frick, a son and two daughters and three grandchildren.

A celebration of life has been scheduled for Monday, December 7 at Christ Episcopal Church in Dover, Delaware.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of George Frick.
