Matron Elims Completed At Dover

Sunday, November 22, 2009  By: Standardbred Canada

The betting public got the best of both worlds by virtue of a 39-1 upsetter and a 7-5 favourite clicking to win Sunday’s $39,082 Matron Stake eliminations for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings at Dover Downs.

Nob Hill High staged a huge late rush to take the opening elimination in a time of 1:50.4 for driver John Campbell and trainer Bruce Saunders. The son of Mcardle-Anniecrombie, who wasn’t on the radar screen of many handicappers, pulled off the shocking win over Clear Vision, Schoolkids and race favourite Mr Wiggles.

The pacer has racked up a 6-0-7 record in 20 starts this season while banking close to $180,000 along the way. He is owned by Robert Mondillo of Delaware and Donald Robinson of Cardington, OH.

Chalk players hit the nail on the head in the second elimination when they tabbed Vintage Master as the one to beat. He rallied from third-over to win in a time of 1:50.4 for the duo of trainer Jimmy Takter and driver Dan Dube. The son of Western Ideal-Arts Vintage, who was a lapped-on third in last week’s $350,000 Progress Pace final, defeated stablemates Straight Shooting and Ideal Race with the fourth-place cheque going to Hypnotic Blue Chip.

Brittany Farms of Versailles, KY and Brian P Monieson Revtrust of Northbrook, IL bred and own the seven-time winner, who upped his lifetime earnings to $1,463,074.

The top four finishers from each of Sunday’s eliminations will return to Dover Downs for next Sunday’s $235,000 final.
